Misoprostol Tablets

Misoprostol is a drug used to start labor, cause an abortion, treat and prevent ulcers, and treat postpartum bleeding because of poor contraction of the uterus.

For terminating pregnancy it is often used with Mifepristone (also known as the abortion pill, Mifeprex.) By itself effectiveness for abortion is between 65 percent and 90 percent.  It is taken either orally, or placed in the vagina.

How to use this medicine?

  • Before you start the medication, read the printed information leaflet from inside the pack. It will provide you sufficient information about this drug.
  • Take the Misoprostol Tablets exactly as your health care provider suggests you to. Your health care provider will suggest you which of Misoprostol medical abortion doses are appropriate for you.
  • If you forget to take a Misoprostol dose, take it as soon as you remember.

What are the potential side effects of misoprostol?

  • Stop taking this drug and seek emergency medical care if you face an allergic reaction (closing of the throat; difficulty breathing; swelling of the tongue, lips, or face; or hives).
  • Misoprostol drug may cause stomach cramps, diarrhea, and/or nausea. These issues typically occur during the first few weeks of medication and stop after about one week. Contact your health care provider if these symptoms hang on for longer than eight days or if they are severe.

Precautions for using Misoprostol:

  • Before taking misoprostol medicine, tell your health care provider if you are allergic to it. This drug may contain inactive components, which can cause allergic reactions or other symptoms. Consult with your doctor for more details.
  • Before using this drug, tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: intestinal/stomach illness.
  • Daily use of tobacco and alcohol may increase your risk for vaginal bleeding. Stop smoking and limit alcohol beverages. Tell your health care provider for more information.
